Meat RecallsThis information really caught my attention. Source "Allergens Have Caused Most Meat Recalls This Year - foodsafetynews.com, July 8, 2011"

The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service, (FSIS) released the following information.

Allergens Recalls

January - June 2011 - Out of 27 recalls for undeclared ingredients, 20 were the result of undeclared allergens. This compares to32 undeclared allergens in the last two years, 2009-2010

e.Coli Recalls

January -June 2011 21,080 pounds of beef have been recalled for E.coli 0157:H7 This compares to millions of pounds of ground beef recalled in the first half of prior years. In all, only 5 of 45 meat recalls made at the request o fFSIS involved idisease-causing E.coli contamination.

Summary

The good news is that Meat Producers are taking steps to reduce bacterial contamination, E.coli 0157:H7. On the side of undeclared allergens, the recalls were prompted by a change in product formulation aor a change in a supplier's ingredients that was not noted on the labels. Undeclared allergens can result in adverse health reactions. Food labels must list ingredients containing one of the main eight allergens, Source Mayo Clinic Food Allergy

  1. Milk
  2. Eggs
  3. Peanuts
  4. Tree nuts (such as almonds, cashews, walnuts)
  5. Fish (such as bass, cod, flounder)
  6. Shellfish (such as crab, lobster, shrimp)
  7. Soy
  8. Wheat

Mislabeling for one of the eight main allergens listed above typically results in a Class I recall because of the associated public health risk.

This information is very interesting and shows a trend with higher allergens. It will be interesting to see how this trend develops over the second half of 2011.
